Green Junction - The Rise of Sustainable Cities

Ecologically-friendly cities, which are also referred to as green cities, are described as urban areas that have prioritized protection for the environment, community well-being and efficient use of resources. Since the rise in urban populations has been largely coupled with the use of fossil fuels, cities have been a major source of pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and environmental destruction. The move toward green cities has required reductions in the burning of fossil fuels, more effective use of resources and restoration of natural areas.

A new study released information on how cities around the globe have been moving away from fossil fuels and toward sustainability and improved quality of life. An environmental economist at the Norwegian Institute for Air Research led the work, which relied on satellite data of nitrogen dioxide levels from January 2019 to December 2024. Nitrogen dioxide is product of fossil fuel burning in vehicles, power plants and industrial facilities. Their assessment of 2,475 of the world’s biggest cities showed that for 80% of them, economic growth is no longer coupled with an increase in fossil-fuel-related emissions.

Municipal sustainability committees and commissions have become more common. The global organization ICLEAI operates in the United States as ICLEI USA, Local Governments for Sustainability USA. Its work in assisting organized sustainability movements focuses on emissions management, circular economy principles, resilient and equitable communities and nature-based solutions that protect ecosystems and biodiversity.

An important requirement for sustainable communities is responsible land use: resistance to the degradation of natural lands and the revitalization of abandoned urban areas. Citizens’ opposition to massive data centers, warehouses and facilities that overuse resources is confirmation that quality of life/environment is important to most people. Other changes toward sustainability include adoption of clean energies, enhanced public transportation and revitalization of natural areas.
